Hen & Flour is a brand new casual restaurant in Medford that serves Southern Comfort Food at affordable prices. The menu is pretty simple, but done well. The fried chicken is the star of the show, with a crispy crust and juicy meat. The chicken sandwich is also a popular choice, featuring a fried chicken breast with house BBQ sauce and coleslaw on a fluffy bun. One side is included with the regular main dish and additional sides are available. The prices for main dishes are all under $14, making Hen & Flour a great value for your money.
For sides, choose between the red beans and rice that are hearty and flavorful with a touch of andouille sausage; mac and cheese that is not soupy, just creamy enough with chopped green onions for texture; and the hush puppies that have a dash of sweet. Collard greens and coleslaw are two additional sides offered on the menu. I did not try either, but I imagine they are tasty.
Here is a more detailed review of the dishes I tried:
Fried chicken: The fried chicken at Hen & Flour is some of the best I’ve ever had. The crust is crispy and not overwhelming. The meat is… well meaty… besides being juicy. The chicken is also fried to order, so it was fresh and hot.
Chicken sandwich: It was sold out by the time I arrived, darn, but I asked a patron who told me it was delicious. You snooze, you lose in this case.
Red beans and rice: The red beans and rice have a little andouille sausage which adds a nice bit of spice and smokiness to the dish.
They do have a few local beers on tap. Another time and I could tell you more, but I did have to work.
Overall, I was very impressed with the food at Hen & Flour. The food was delicious and affordable. I would recommend Hen & Flour to anyone looking for a great casual dining experience or takeout.
