More from Mick Mize, the very well-received speaker at our October Power Hour

Mick runs a coaching practice helping individuals, entrepreneurs, and leaders create the lives they’re craving.
What if it’s not the economy?
What if the thing slowing us down isn’t inflation or foot traffic or market trends?
What if the thing getting in the way… is fear?
- Fear that it’s all out of our hands. That we’re at the mercy of someone else’s rules, rhythms, or rising interest rates.
But here’s what I’ve seen again and again: when we stop handing over our power to things we can’t control, creativity rushes in like our fall rains. When we own our efforts and get into action, we see that we actually have a LOT of power. And momentum creates motivation.
My client Alice wanted to set working hours that may not work for some clients. That was the life and business she wanted, but fear came up: “It’s not accommodating, it may not work for everyone, I’ll lose clients.”
But when we realized her business needed to work for HER first, and that her fear of upsetting clients was preventing that, she was able to find her power.
She chose instead to think “I will find the people my hours work for.” And the fear disappeared. She reached out to new people, reminded herself her business was her own, and was clear with clients what she offered and when.
Alice now has a full practice and a waitlist.
So again: What if the only thing getting in our way is fear?
Here are some things we DO have power over: We can reach out to friends and offer our services at a discount. We can create workshops, talks, or discussions to educate and support. We can offer former clients or customers discounts or coupons or new offerings. We can connect with them just to see how they’re doing, what’s going on for them now. We can ask for reviews, testimonials, or feedback – and see what creativity arises from what we learn. We can see our days as an opportunity to create, rather than react.
And that’s how we create the businesses we want.
Exercise – Write out your answers (or talk with a friend!) about these questions: “How would I show up for my business if I wasn’t afraid? If I were massively creative, resourceful, and exploratory, what would I try?”
P.S. If you’re a Downtown Medford Association member, you’re eligible for a complimentary one-on-one coaching session to explore these questions and more. (It’s one of the perks of being in this community! Reach out to Mick at [email protected] or the DMA team to set yours up.)
